
During an interview for Entertainment Weekly with the cast members of “The Devil Wears Prada” it was confirmed that Anne Hathaway was the ninth option for the role of Andy, competing along with other movie stars such as Kate Hudson, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. David Frankel, the director of the movie, expressed that "we had offered it to Rachel McAdams three times. The studio was determined to have her, and she was determined not to do it”.

Nonetheless, Hathaway’s determination made her finally landing the part. The “The Princess Diary” star remembered about Andy’s role: “It spoke to me. It made me feel. It was about a subject that I take very seriously, but in such a wonderfully joyful and lighthearted way”.
Elizabeth Gabler, president of Fox in the 2000s, also explained the important role of Meryl Streep in the election of Anne as Andy. Apparently, Streep had seen Hathaway in Brokeback Mountain and she met her during the auditioning period and then called Fox to make official her election for the part.
